The Forth Estuary is home to both Grey and Harbour (common) Seals.
The grey seal is the larger of the two UK seal species. Their scientific name is Halichoerus grypus, meaning hook-nosed sea pig, which in all honesty seems a bit harsh.
Seals spend most of their time out at sea feeding on fish, returning to land to rest. They can often be seen ‘hauled out’, along the Fife coast.
